If you buy the unit at Lowes and hire your own licensed plumber instead, the installation labour alone is $400 to $1,000 for a tank swap, plus $50 to $150 delivery (or free in-store pickup). That unit-plus-independent-installer route is often the cheapest overall, typically $1,100 to $2,500 all-in.

The unit-only path: when it makes sense
Buying the unit at Lowes and bringing in your own licensed plumber is often the cheapest overall path. The savings come from two places. First, Lowes' unit-only pricing is generally $50 to $200 below Home Depot on equivalent models and is competitive with online plumbing supply (SupplyHouse, PlumbersStock). Second, an independent plumber charging $400 to $1,000 for install labour usually undercuts the labour portion of the Lowes bundled quote by $100 to $400.
The trade-off is warranty interface. With Lowes bundled, you call one number if anything goes wrong. With unit-only, the unit warranty is via AO Smith (or whoever the brand is) and the install warranty is via the plumber. If the unit fails in year 3, you take it back to Lowes (or call AO Smith directly), get a replacement under the parts warranty, and pay your plumber for installation labour on the replacement. Not a hardship if you have a good relationship with your plumber, but more work than the bundled path.
The honest recommendation: get a written Lowes bundle quote, get a written quote from a local independent plumber for install of a customer-supplied unit, and compare totals. The savings on the unit-only path are real but the bundled path is genuinely more convenient. Choose based on price gap and your comfort with warranty management.
